How to Manually Install a WordPress Theme using FTP

This WordPress tutorial shows you how to manually install a WordPress theme using a FTP client. This method is something I will not recommended for beginners in WordPress.

So, if you're new to WordPress or not familiar with FTP, first read this article about how to use FTP for WordPress or you can just go for an alternate easy method for installing a theme in WordPress.

Install WordPress theme manually using FTP

Important: This method is an advanced tutorial guide on installing a theme in WordPress. If you are a beginner or installing a WordPress theme for the first, I advise you to go with caution before using this method.

To manually install WordPress theme via an FTP, you need to have an FTP software installed on your computer like FileZilla Client or you can access FTP using your hosting c-panel.

I'm assuming you have already downloaded the theme (in .zip format) which you want to install. Make sure you unzip the .zip downloaded theme file on your computer. You can use Winrar or 7zip for unzipping any zip files. So, you have unzipped the theme folder. Now you need to upload the theme to WordPress Theme directory which is [wp-content/themes].

Follow the step by step instruction to upload a WordPress theme:
  1. Login to your FTP account using FileZilla.
  2. Go to wp-content/themes. Upload the unzipped theme folder here and this will automatically install the theme. Note: Here you can find all your installed theme folders. You can delete any unactivated theme if you want to do so.

How to Stop Indexing of Labels & Archives in Blogger

Noindex Labels and Archives in Blogger

In Blogger, Google indexes the Archives and Labels pages in search results which creates a duplicate content issue. Google takes strict action against duplicate content i.e if you have more than one URL pointing to a same page.

So, it is advised to no-index your Blogger Labels and Archives pages so your blog won't get penalized by the search engine.

So, lets do this one by one. In this Blogger tutorial, I will show you how to prevent duplicate content issue by telling search engine not to index archive pages and label pages. Let's proceed.

How to Avoid indexing of Archive pages in Blogger

To noindex Archive pages in Blogger, you have to add a 3 line of code to your Blogger template inside the <head> section. Follow the steps below:
  • Go to your Blogger dashboard and select your blog.
  • At the left side, Click Theme > Edit HTML.
  • Find the <head> tag. Place your mouse cursor anywhere in the code, and press Ctrl+F and search <head>.
  • Just below the <head> tag, paste the below code.
<b:if cond=’data:blog.pageType == &quot;archive&quot;’>
<meta content=’noindex,noarchive’ name=’robots’/>
</b:if>
  • Click Save theme. Press Hide warning before saving the theme.
The above code will tell the search engine to stop indexing Archive pages. Your already indexed archives pages will disappear from the search results after sometime. It could take about 2 months.

How to Avoid indexing of Labels in Blogger

  • Go to your Blogger dashboard.
  • At the left side, Click Settings > Search Preferences.

Blogger tutorial - HowToArticle

Disallow: /search/labels/ Allow: /
no index labels in Blogger

That's it. This will tell search engine to exclude crawling and indexing labels pages of your blog. The robots.txt file is an important file for every blog and you should add custom robots.txt file.

If you haven't added one, you can do so by first creating a sitemap for your blogger blog and then add it to robots.txt file, learn how to do it here.
