Most of the default WordPress settings are not SEO friendly and we have to change these settings to set up our WordPress blog properly. In this guide, you will know about 8 essential WordPress settings for your WordPress blog.

1. Delete Demo Post, Page and Comment

With the installation of WordPress, by default, a demo post, page, and comment are also published on your WordPress site.

To delete demo post, log in to your dashboard, and go to Posts and delete the 'Hello World' demo post.

To delete demo page, go to Pages > All Pages and delete the default page.

Similarly, click on Comments, and delete the default comment.

2. Set up Permalink Structure

Permalinks are the URLs to all your content including post, pages, categories, and tags of your WordPress website. Permalinks of each post should never change. In WordPress, default permalinks are not SEO-friendly and, you need to change that.

On your WordPress dashboard, go to Settings > Permalinks.

Select Post name and click Save Changes.

3. Change Title, Tagline, Timezone, Date and Time format

 Go to Settings > General. It is a general settings window for your blog.

Here, add a proper site title and tagline for your blog. These settings are very important because Google shows title and tagline in search results. (see screenshot below)

4. WordPress Discussion Settings

Discussion setting is how your visitor will connect to your site through comments and e-mail. Go to Settings > Discussion and set the settings just exactly like shown in the screenshot below.

5. Enable/Disable User Registration

This is important to understand. In WordPress, you can have a multi-author blog or you can assign yourself as the sole author. If there are more than one people working on your WordPress site, then you can his/her role as a contributor. Though, you will remain the administrator of your account. 

In your General Settings, scroll down to 'Membership' section and tick the 'Anyone can register' checkbox. Now, you have to assign a role to every new user who registers on your website. For example, if you want to accept guest blogging, change the New User Default Role to Contributor.

If you don't want any user registration, uncheck the 'Anyone can register' box.

6. Configure Reading Settings

By default, WordPress displays latest posts on the homepage. But, if you want to display a custom homepage, go to Reading settings and change Homepage displays to 'A static page'  and select the pages and posts you want to show on the homepage instead of the latest post.

7. Update WordPress Ping List

By default, WordPress uses only one Ping service. But, we can add more Ping services by adding them to the list. List of Ping services for WordPress.

8. Install Theme and Delete Unused Ones

After installing a new theme, make sure you delete the unused theme as you won't need them. Go to Appearance > Themes and hover over a theme you want to delete and click Theme Details. Click Delete at the bottom-right corner.

3. Now, you have to add items to your menu. As you can see in the left column (see screenshot below), you can add pages, posts, custom links and categories as a menu item.

First, we will show how to add pages to a menu. Click on Pages and select the page which you want to appear in the menu. Click Add to menu.

If you want to rearrange the order of the menu items, just drag and drop them accordingly.

After doing this, select the menu location to Primary or Top to add the menu to the navigation bar and click Save menu.

Similarly, you can add posts and categories to menu items and arrange them to your desired position using the same drag and drop technique.

What if you want to add a link to an external website or your facebook or twitter profile? This can be done using the custom links option.

Add the link you want to add in the URL section and in the Link Text field add the text which will appear in the menu. Click Add to Menu.

How to Insert Facebook Like Button on Blogger

In this Blogger tutorial, you are going to learn how to add Facebook like button on Blogger. Having a Facebook like button on your blog allows your visitors to promote/share your blog content on the Facebook wall and Newsfeed.

Step #1. First, make sure you're logged into your Facebook account. Then, enter the following URL into the address bar and open it.
Step #2. Now, add the URL of your blogger blog in which you'd like to add the Facebook like button. (see screenshot for reference)

Note: Under Like Button Configurator, you can also set the width, layout, and size of the button. Change according to your preference.

Step #3. Click Get Code to generate the code.

Step #4. Select the IFRAME code and copy it.

Now, you have generated the Facebook like button code for your Blogger blog. It's time to add it to your blog. You can add the code using two ways: the first way is using the gadget method and second way is to insert the code into the Blogger template. I have mentioned both ways to add Facebook like button to Blogger.

Note: Do Step 5 ---> Step 7 to add the code using the Gadget method. Most of the time it adds the like button at the sidebar.

Step #5. Now, login to your Blogger dashboard and choose Layout from the left navigation bar.

Step #6. Click on Add a Gadget link and add the HTML/Javascript gadget.

Step #7. Paste the code generated in Step 4 above and click Save. (see screenshot below)

Perform Step 8 ---> Step 11 to add the code to the blog post.

Step #8. On your blogger dashboard, go to Theme > Edit HTML.

Step #9. Click Hide warning if it shows any HTTPs warning.

Step #9. Place your mouse cursor anywhere inside the code and press Ctrl+F to open the Blogger search box.

Step #10. Inside the search box, type <data:post.body/> and hit enter.

Step #11. Paste the Facebook like button code just below the <data:post.body/> and save the template.

Visit your blog to see the Facebook like button on every blog posts on blogger.

How to Manually Install a WordPress Theme using FTP

This WordPress tutorial shows you how to manually install a WordPress theme using a FTP client. This method is something I will not recommended for beginners in WordPress.

So, if you're new to WordPress or not familiar with FTP, first read this article about how to use FTP for WordPress or you can just go for an alternate easy method for installing a theme in WordPress.

Important: This method is an advanced tutorial guide on installing a theme in WordPress. If you are a beginner or installing a WordPress theme for the first, I advise you to go with caution before using this method.

To manually install WordPress theme via an FTP, you need to have an FTP software installed on your computer like FileZilla Client or you can access FTP using your hosting c-panel.

I'm assuming you have already downloaded the theme (in .zip format) which you want to install. Make sure you unzip the .zip downloaded theme file on your computer. You can use Winrar or 7zip for unzipping any zip files. So, you have unzipped the theme folder. Now you need to upload the theme to WordPress Theme directory which is [wp-content/themes]. 

Follow the step by step instruction to upload a WordPress theme:
  1. Login to your FTP account using FileZilla.
  2. Go to wp-content/themes. Upload the unzipped theme folder here and this will automatically install the theme. Note: Here you can find all your installed theme folders. You can delete any unactivated theme if you want to do so.

  3. Now, you have to activate the theme. To do so, login to Wordpress Dashboard. Then, go to Appearance > Themes.
  4. Here you will find your manually installed theme. Hover the mouse over the theme and click on Activate button. This will activate the WordPress theme.

How to Create Bootable USB Flash Drive for Windows 10

This Windows guide will show you how to create Bootable Windows 10 USB Flash Drive that can be used to clean install Official Windows 10.

Unlike previous versions, Microsoft offers Windows 10 on USB Flash drive too. For that, you'll need a USB Pendrive drive of at least 4 GB (bigger will be better). You can use Microsoft's Media Creation tool or a third-party software like Rufus to create Windows 10 Bootable USB Flash Drive.

In this tutorial, we will be covering both methods showing you step-by-step instructions for creating Windows 10 Bootable USB.

  • A stable Internet connection.
  • A USB Flash/Pendrive of at least 4 GB storage. (8 GB or bigger is preferred)
  • If you're installing Windows 10 for the first time, you'll need a valid product key.

This is the easiest way to put Windows 10 in a Bootable USB Pendrive. Media Creation Tool from Microsoft will download the Windows 10 ISO file and create a Windows installation media that can be used to install Windows 10.

Step 1. Visit Official Windows 10 page and download the Media Creation tool by clicking the Download too now button.

Step 2. Save the tool on your PC and run it. (Click Yes if prompted by UAC)

Step 3. Click Accept to agree to the license terms.

Step 4. Now, select Create installation media (USB flash drive, DVD or ISO file) and click Next to proceed.

Step 5. Uncheck the recommended settings option if you want to install different architecture, language, and edition of Windows 10 ISO in USB flash drive.

You can choose from Windows 10 Pro and Home Edition. And, for Architecture, select 32-bit (x86) if your computer is 32-bit architecture or 64-bit (x64) if your computer is 64-bit architecture.

Step 6. Select USB flash drive and click Next.

Step 7. Now, connect USB flash drive (Pendrive) to your computer. Click Refresh drive list and it will show the USB removable drive. Click on Next to continue.

Step 8. Windows 10 setup will now download the Windows 10 to the connected USB drive. It may take some time depending on your Internet connection speed.

Step 9. Once the download is completed, your bootable Windows 10 USB flash drive is ready. Go and install Windows 10 on your computer.

Use Rufus to Create Windows 10 Bootable USB Flash drive

If you're having a problem or getting an error while creating a Bootable Flash drive for Windows 10 using Media Creation Tool from Microsoft, in that case, you can use a third party software - Rufus that is designed specifically for creating a USB Flash drive for an ISO file.

2. Download the Rufus tool and install it.

3. Connect USB pen drive to the computer and run Rufus as administrator.

4. Rufus will automatically detect USB file drive and File system settings.

5. Select ISO image from the drop-down list and click the CD icon next to it. Select your Windows 10 ISO file location.

6. Click Start and click OK and ignore the warning.

7. Rufus will now start creating the bootable flash drive. It may take few minutes to complete the process.

How to Mount or Unmount ISO Images in Windows 10 or 8

This Windows guide shows you how to mount or unmount ISO images (file) in Windows 10, Windows 8.1 or Windows 8 without installing any third-party software.

An ISO Image is a file that is an exact copy of a CD or DVD having a file extension of .iso. ISO files are often used by software companies to distribute large programs over the internet such that all the files are neatly wrapped inside a single file. Even a clean install of Windows require an ISO file of Windows 10 need to be download from Microsoft.

There are many ways you can mount an ISO file in Windows 8/8.1/10 OS. Let's cover all of them in this tutorials.

Mount or Unmount ISO Image File using File Explorer

1. Right click the .iso file and click Mount. or double click the .iso file.

Open file explorer where ISO file is located and select/highlight it. At the top, click the Manage tab and click Mount.

2. The image file will be mounted in a virtual drive in File Explorer. You can see all the contents of the ISO Image in the newly created virtual drive.

3. To unmount the file, just right click the virtual DVD drive and click Eject.

Mount or Unmount ISO Image using Powershell

1. On your Start search menu, type PowerShell,  right click on the result (Windows PowerShell) and run it as administrator.

2. To mount an Image at PowerShell, type the following command and press Enter. (see screenshot below)

Make sure you change the Path of ISO file with the actual path of ISO file where it is located. Not. e: Make sure the location path is inside the quotation.

3. Once done, you can see the mounted file in the virtual disc (DVD drive) in File Explorer.

4. To unmount the ISO, type the following command in the PowerShell.
Dismount-DiskImage -ImagePath "Path of ISO file"
Replace the Path of ISO file with the actual location of the file.

This concludes the tutorial here. As you can see, it is quite easy to mount or unmount ISO files in Windows 10 or Windows 8 OS. After mounting the Image file, you can view its content and install the software without burning it to an actual DVD or USB.

How to Upgrade to Windows 10 from Windows 7/8/10

This Windows guide will show you a step-by-step instructions on how to upgrade to Windows 10 from your existing Windows 10, Windows 8.1/8 or Windows 7.

  • Official Windows 7/8/8.1 or 10.
  • A stable Internet connection.
  • At least 16 GB of hard disk space.

Important Points to read before upgrade:

  • Make sure you backup your PC before you go through the procedure. However, the upgrade process is pretty simple and you won't lose any personal files. But still, it is recommended to back up your files in case if anything goes wrong during the upgrade you can restore back to the previous settings.
  • If you're using any third-party Antivirus software, please turn it off or uninstall it.
  • Windows 10 upgrade process will automatically determine the correct version for your Windows. If your current version of Windows is 32-bit architecture, it will update to 32-bit of Windows 10 version. Similarly, the 64-bit version will be upgraded to the same version. You can't upgrade from 32-bit to 64-bit or vice-versa.
  • The procedure will also make sure that you upgrade to the correct editions of the Windows 10. If you're running Windows 7 or 8 Pro edition, you'll be upgraded to the Windows 10 Pro. Similarly, Home edition will be updated to the Home edition, and Enterprise will be updated to the Enterprise Edition of Windows 10.

Step 2: Save the tool on your PC and run it and click Yes if prompted.

Step 5: The tools will begin downloading the Windows 10. It might take some time depending upon your internet speed.

Step 6: When it finishes the download. Click Accept to agree to the license agreement.

Step 7: Windows 10 setup will check for additional updates and install them.

Step 8: Click Install to start upgrading to Windows 10 and go to step . It will keep all your personal files and settings safe as it was before.

If you want to choose what you want to keep after the upgrade, click Change what to keep link.

Step 9: After clicking "Change what to keep", the setup will ask you what files you want to keep after the upgrade. Select your desired choice and click Next. (see screenshot below).

After hitting the Next button, you'll be returned to previous screen which you saw in the last step (Step 8) and then click Install to start the upgrade.

Step 10: The setup will now upgrade your PC to Windows 10. Your PC will reboot quite a few time during the update process. When finished, it will start with Welcome to Windows 10 screen showing your user account. Click Next.

Step 11: Now, on the next screen, you'll have to select the Privacy Settings for your Windows 10 PC. Read all the settings and choose accordingly and click Accept to proceed.

Step 12: If you want to turn on Cortana, click Use Cortana or if you want to do it later click Not now

Step 13: The next screen will show you the details of some new apps (default) in Windows 10. Click Next

Note: You can change the default app in Windows 10 at anytime.

Step 14: Now, you'll be able to sign in to Windows 10.

You can create a copy of your Windows 10 OS by downloading an ISO file directly from Microsoft by using Media Creation Tool. You can clean install Windows 10 (or reinstall) using the Windows 10 ISO file you just downloaded via a USB Bootable drive or DVD.

This Windows tutorial shows you how to use Media Creation tool to download Windows 10 ISO file directly from Microsoft.

Note: We are assuming you have an Official Windows 10 installed on your PC and signed in as an administrator.

  • Official Windows 10 license.
  • A stable internet connection.
  • Sufficient storage of at least 4 GB on Computer / USB / DVD for storing the download file.

Step 1: Visit Microsoft Windows 10 Official page and download the Media Creation Tool by clicking the Download tool now button. (see screenshot below)

Step 2: This will download the Media Creation tool on your PC. Run the tool and click Yes if prompted.

Step 3: Click Accept to agree to Microsoft Software license terms. (see screenshot below)

Step 4: Select the second option - Create installation media (USB flash drive, DVD, or ISO file) for another PC and then click Next. (refer to screenshot below)

Step 5: The recommended settings are already set i.e your currently installed Windows 10 OS. Uncheck the box Use the recommended options for this PC if you want to download different architecture, language, and edition. (see screenshot below)

Step 6: Now, it asks to Choose which media to use, Select ISO file and click Next.

Step 7: Select the folder where you would like to save the ISO file on your computer and then hit the Save button. (see screenshot for reference)

Step 7: It will begin downloading the Windows 10 ISO file. (refer to screenshot below)

Step 8: Once the download is finished, you have two option to select. Click on the file to open the file explorer where you saved the ISO. You can then mount the ISO file to install it directly. However, if your PC is not working properly, you can burn the ISO to DVD or USB Flash drive.

That's it. You have successfully downloaded ISO file of Windows 10 using Media Creation Tool from Microsoft.
